Have you heard of the prophet Moses?
Moses is mentioned in the Book of Exodus in the Old Testament, and he is well-known for having led the enslaved Israelite people out of Egypt. There have been a number of Hollywood movies about his life.
Sometime after that on Mount Sinai, he received 10 commandments from God that were engraved on stone tablets. Moses made a portable temple made of tents to hold these holy tablets.
King Solomon who ruled during the golden era of Israel built a temple in the city of Jerusalem. This temple was destroyed by external invaders and was later rebuilt. When Jesus Christ lived on the earth, this rebuilt 2nd temple stood in Jerusalem.
In the New Testament, it is recorded that Jesus preached in the temple and purified the temple because it had become polluted. After the time of Christ, the temple was destroyed by a Roman army in 70 AD.
In the 19th Century, Latter-day Saints were commanded by God to build a temple just as He had commanded the ancient people of Israel. In 1836, the first temple in this era was constructed in the United States.
Ever since then the church has continued to build temples. As of the end of 2014, there were 144 operating temples around the world.
This is a model showing the internal design of the Salt Lake Temple in the state of Utah. The temple is the place where families can be linked together.
Beginning with the new family created by the wedding ceremony, a person is sealed to their family and their ancestors, and ordinances that commemorate their ancestors are performed.
Marriages performed in temples are not 'until death do you part'--they continue on eternally after this world.
In Japan, the Tokyo Temple was built in 1980, and the Fukuoka Temple was built in 2000. The Sapporo Temple is currently under construction.
